Book Review: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2)Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Genre: YA, Modern Fantasy
Series: Books 2 of Harry Potter

This review contains no spoilers.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is one of my favorites and it always has been. I really love it and the story, and it’s kind of the last of the stories before they get really dark. The movies especially have Chamber of Secrets being the last one before things get dark and scary and you really realize that bad things are happening. However, reading it this time it seemed to have lost some of the magic that it had in the past. Perhaps that was because it was after one of my favorites and between my very favorite. Meaning that it just wasn’t meeting the expectation that The Philosopher’s Stone had set and I was anxious to start The Prisoner of Azkaban. Regardless it was still really good, and I had to struggle a lot to convince myself to mark it as a four star review rather than a five star.

Despite being the first time a Horcrux is revealed to the audience, Chamber of Secrets is  the last book before you really start to see that theres a much bigger plot at work. It still has Harry, Ron, and Hermione being blessedly innocent of what’s to come and still getting along most of the time (before pubescent crushes/Ron being a jerk sets in). I would still recommend Chamber of Secrets to everyone and anyone and its something that’s worth a read every few years, but is it my favorite like it once was? No.

Gilderoy Lockhart

Pottermore Page

According to Pottermore it’s his mother’s fault he’s so vain. He was the only one of his three siblings to show magic. I also think that he would have been jealous of Harry, because when Harry arrived at Hogwarts people whispered and gossiped about him which was what Lockhart wanted. The fact that he’s a Ravenclaw (like me) makes me rather sad. He wasn’t a bad wizard, just a lazy one, and wanted to direct all the attention to himself with as little effort as possible. So after graduating he only invested his time in memory charms. Despite popular tumblr posts suggesting that Dumbledore only hired Lockhart because he thought it would be hilarious, he actually hired him because he was one of the few people who knew the man  was a fraud and wanted him exposed.

So while I was reading CoS I realized I had forgotten something very important: how much I actually hate Lockhart. He really just drives me up the wall, and even as a child I could never understand why all the girls went for him. For one he’s way to old and that would be creepy, and mostly he’s just really self-centered and even as a child I knew someone that self-obsessed could never be in a good, healthy relationship.
