Fanboy: Totally Awesome Weekend 2017

Last weekend, my best friend and I attended our local version of comic con, its called Fanboy and they have two events every year, one in October and one over the summer in either June or July. Its a very fun event,

As I’ve done the last few years, I made my own halloween costume, and that’s what I wore to the con. The character is Maglor Feanorian, a character from JRR Tolkien’s Silmarillion. For those more familiar with the Lord of the Rings, Maglor and his brother raised Elrond of Rivendell. Its the most complicated costume I’ve ever created, with well over 15 hours worth of hand beading and embroidery.

If you’d like more information on how I made the costume, follow my craft blog, I have a few updates planned.

Doctor Strange Featurette

NaBloPoMo 2016 #3

What: A fifteen minute special preview of Doctor Strange
Where: Movie Theater
When: 7pm on October 10th 2015

There are no spoilers!!!!!

It was only a fifteen minute preview, so it didn’t contain any important plot points or anything, just some teasers, jokes, and a few hints of what is to come. I meant to post this ages ago, but it got lost in the dark hole that is my drafts folder, so I thought I would pull it out since the movie is premiering in the US tomorrow.

Thoughts Before

I typed all of this up before I went and saw the preview.

I just laugh every time I admit to myself that I’m about to drive (well, make my mom drive me) forty five minutes from my house to see fifteen minutes of a movie that I’ll have to wait three more weeks to see more of.

Am I okay? Maybe not.

I just really, really love Doctor Strange and I’m not ashamed about that. The comics are really good (he is absolutely my favorite Marvel Super Hero and I have read so many of his comics since I started three months ago its not even funny) and I cannot wait for this movie.

I also really, really love the cast. That’s not to say I live in a hole, I’ve heard and researched all of the whitewashing claims (just so you know, Stephen Strange is white in the comics and there is no proof that Oscar Issac was considered for the part), and the Ancient One and The Sorcerer Supreme are titles that can belong to anyone, but I’m not going to let that stop me from going.

Benedict Cumberbatch is an amazing man, Tilda Swinton could literally sleep in a glass box and I would watch it (oh wait, that actually happened), Benedict Wong is going to be ten times better than the comic version of Wong (yes he is a man named Wong playing a character named Wong), and Chiwetel Ejiofor is going to absolutely break my heart as Mordo because I want to like him but I know better because its a train wreck waiting to happen. Mads Mickelson I would be excited about, except I’ve never seen Hannibal and I don’t think Marvel told him anything about his character and to explain what I mean, here are some actual things he has said in interviews and explanations of why he is wrong:

“This character is not in the comic books.”   Wrong. He is in a few comics, not many, but a few. Although its worth noting that this character is very different than his comic counterpart and that might be what he meant, but he still is technically in the comics.

“My character believes in a better world… He’s definitely not a villain in the classic sense.”   Well, even Loki thinks he’s doing whats best for the world? So that’s not really anything new.

“Unlike a lot of Superhero Villains, he’s a man of ideas.”   Except Hydra? And the Red Skull? And Magneto? Lux Luther? And all the other ‘idealogical’ villains in comic books and their movies?

So even though he’s confused I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say I’m sure he’s going to be great as Kaecilius. I’m a bit nervous about the Night Nurse aka Christine Palmer, if I’m completely honest. I really wasn’t ever a fan of her in the comics, and they’re not even using the correct Night Nurse.

To summarize quickly: Night Nurse is an alias used mainly by three women throughout the comics, Linda Carter dated Doctor Strange in The Oath but they broke off at some point off screen, but the MCU has, for some reason, decided to use Christine Palmer instead.

I want to be really excited about her, but the last time Doctor Strange had a Doctor Girlfriend was in the Doctor Strange animated movie and it was….. weird. Other than that the cast is perfect, however. Apparently Benedict Cumberbatch almost cried when he got the part, and I’m excited to see the “wise old mentor trope” which is almost always a man (Obi-Wan, Dumbledore, Gandalf, etc) played by a woman because if that’s not flipping off the patriarchy I don’t know what is.

There’s also a rumor and some hints that Doctor Strange might heal his hands which he never does in the comics and I hope he never does in the movies because having a disabled man with PTSD as one of the most powerful people in the universe is just awesome to me.

Other than that the movie looks like its going to be spectacular.

Thoughts After

I typed all of this up after I went and saw the preview.
No spoilers here, just vague thoughts.

It was fantastic!!! I am more excited than ever for the movie, and that’s hard to say. I’ve decided that I’m going to an Imax 3D showing, which is something I don’t usually do because of the cost and just because its not something I like (I tend to get headaches) but this movie is definitely worth both.

RWBY Volume 2 Screening

Media Monday
Webseries Review

No Spoilers!

As I mentioned on my review of RWBY Volume 1, the reason I watched the first season was because of a special screening that I was going to be attending with my best friend.

The Showing

If I had to pick the most insane thing that ever happened to me, I’d pick this. Because I don’t know how else to explain the insanity, I’ll be giving a play-by-play using the timestamps on the text updates I was sending my mom.

I literally woke up the next morning and had to get out my phone and look at the photos to prove to myself that THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED!

  • 6:40 pm
    • I arrived at the theater and met my BFF’s sister
  • 6:50
    • My BFF finally arrived and joined us.
  • 7:00
    • Credits start
  • 7:15
    • They start Volume one and we all get confused (because, remember, its supposed to be a showing of Volume two)
    • Someone leaves to get a manager
  • 7:20
    • We still don’t know whats going on
    • Someone else leaves to get a manager
    • We start laughing about it
  • 7:25
    • The screen goes blank
    • Someone from the theater comes in and says they think they can have it running in about 30 minutes
  • 7:50
    • The screen is still blank, so someone comes in and says we can watch Volume 1, and “as soon as we have Volume 2 up and running you can watch that.”
  • 8:53
    • Volume 1 is still playing
    • “Volume 2 will start at 9:30” – the manager
  • 9:42
    • Volume one is over by this point
    • “It should start in ten minutes or so” – the manager
  • 9:53
    • Someone starts playing music from RWBY (it has a pretty amazing sound track) on their iphone and we have an impromptu karaoke session
    • I have been forbidden from sharing the video of my BFF singing with anyone
  • 9:57
    • The manager comes back in and says “it will be a few minutes”
    • A man stands up and says “Sir my chair just broke” and holds up the cushion from the bottom of his chair.
    • We all laugh.
    • The manager looks so done with us
  • 10:00
    • My BFF starts using me as a pillow and her sister as a foot rest
  • 10:15
    • All hell broke loose
    • The man who broke the chair cushion was asked to pose with it
    • Someone offered him a sharpie
    • He signed it
  • 10:19
    • Other people start signing the chair
    • At some point a worker for the theater comes in and catches us signing the chair. He signs it to and tells the man – dubbed “Broken Chair Man” – that he can keep it.
    • We made a hashtag on twitter: #BrokenChairMan (I’m linking to it in case you don’t believe me)
  • 10:25
    • Someone started playing Taps on their phone
    • We held a funeral for the chair
  • 10:36
    • Volume 2 is FINALLY about to start (like, they started some quick previews and everything)
  • 10:40
    • My BFF’s sister leaves and makes her walk her out
    • A RWBY chibi episode starts and my BFF has to run to get back to see it
  • 1:18 am
    • It is finally over and we all head home
    • Broken Chair Man took the seat with him, I believe.
    • The manager gave us the contact info of Tugg (the company that sent them the wrong volume) so we could complain to them instead. I’m not sure anyone did, we had too much fun (and the theater gave us free refils all night to keep us quiet)

Volume 2

Volume 2 was much, much better than volume one, and if you’ve read my review of volume 1, you’ll know that I really, really loved it. Like, a lot. But volume 2 was much better. It had a more diverse cast of characters – everyone in Volume 1 was white! But not so in Volume 2! – and the background characters were fully animated, so they weren’t just black shadows.

The storyline was also much better, and even funnier (it starts with the most epic food fight ever) and it also managed to incorporate social issues (and my favorite teacher, Professor Ooblek, got a huge part).

Theres not much else I can say without spoiling anything, just know that if you liked Volume 1 this one is so much better!

Fanboy Expo 2016

img_4364Fanboy Expo was in Knoxville from June 24-26th, so of course my best friend and I (being the huge nerds that we are) decided that we needed to get over there ourselves and check it out. For, you know, reasons.

My goal (as of Tuesday night) was to throw together a Scarlet Witch Age of Ultron cosplay from various thrift store finds (plus my own closet). I more or less succeeded. I have an entire post up detailing how I did the cosplay that I’d love for you to check out on my craft blog.img_4401

Oh, and if you’re bored and want a good laugh, check out their Costume Contest Rules, it includes gems such as “anything overly stabby” and “DO NOT BRING SILLY STRING. Period. Ever. It makes a giant mess.”

I had a lot of fun, there were so many people that I kept seeing things and getting distracted, and, to make a long story short, I know I missed a lot. The cosplays ranged from the dozens of Ghostbusters and Captain Amercias, to a handful of Legend of Zelda people, and even some X-Men!

Everyone’s reaction to my cosplay was amazing, and I saw a lot of people pointing and taking photos which absolutely made my day. There was only one strange experience (I was too confused to call it ‘bad’) where I was looking an action figure of Scarlet Witch in the comics and a man commented that I “had almost the right outfit.” I couldn’t decide if he was messing with me, a comic purist, or wanted to see more of my butt. The one downfall of my costume, was that every time I bent over I felt like it exposed a lot of skin.

Merch & Booths

You can’t go to a convention without picking up at least some merchandise.

img_4356One of the people I met was at a booth for the artist Strong Style ArtStrong Style Art, and I purchased their Vision and Scarlet Witch piece, so they took a photo of me in my cosplay with the art.You can see their Instagram post of me with the art down below in the Social Media posts.

img_4429My mother had been complaining about not having any coasters in the living room, so I bought her some while I was there: A Lord of the Rings one (the Doors of Durin), a Harry Potter one (Ravenclaw!), an X-Man one with Rogue (it says “you can’t touch this”), and Scarlet Witch (it says “witches be like”). When I bought the Scarlet Witch one I didn’t read it, I just thought it was pretty, so once I got home and read it I had a tiny heart attack because for a moment I thought it said “bitches” instead of “witches.”

I also got a ton of pins and patches (thats my weakness, pins and patches) and some other assorted jewelry (I got a necklace of Ravenclaw’s Diadem. It is lost no more!). And two beautiful, tin bookmarks that they promised me would hold up to basically anything (because we all know that pretty bookmarks are the first to go).

What to Expect at a Convention

  • Cosplayers
    • This should probably go without saying.
    • There will be people who put your costume to shame.
      • Don’t feel bad because your cosplay isn’t as ‘fancy’ as the others. Mine cost less than thirty dollars, it does not get better than that.
      • Some of them will be kids. Yes, kids decked out in super fancy cosplays.
    • Don’t be afraid to ask to photograph them or ask to get photos with them.
      • I wish I’d asked for a photo with the Professor X that I saw, or one of the Captain Americas.
    • Duplicates
      • I got lucky and was the only Scarlet Witch that I saw, but I did see several Stormtroopers, a platoon of Ghostbusters, and a whole army of Captain Americas.
        • Seriously guys, if Civil War had broken out at the convention, Team Iron Man would have been flattened, because I saw 1 Iron Man, 3 or 4 Spidermans, and then like 50 Captain Americas (and me, Scarlet Witch).
      • That doesn’t mean that one is ‘better’ than the other.
      • If you see someone cosplaying the same person as you, play cool. Ask to take a photo together. You will probably make their day.
        • Similarly, if you see someone who is dressed as someone important to your character (family, friend, love interest, etc) get a picture together. I was so hoping to see a Quicksilver or a Vision (or even Hawkeye because he and Wanda are the ultimate BrOTP).
    • Comments
      • Many of them will be supportive. Some will not. Some you won’t know what its mean to be (like the comment I got that could have been either a joke, meant to be friendly, meant to insult me for not reading comics, or been flat out inappropriate).
      • Don’t let them get to you.
    • Butts-n-Boobs
      • Some cosplays show a lot of skin. Some cover you from head to toe.
      • If something bothers you don’t look.
  • Stuff
    • I could not be more shocked by the sheer amount of stuff.
    • Ask for buisness cards. It doesn’t matter if you bought something from the person or not: it makes them happy and that way if you wish you’d bought something you can look them up.
    • Don’t expect to see the X-Men very often. I’m not sure why, but its rare (trust me I was forced to search every booth).
  • Celebrities & Guest Stars
    • Actors you thought were dead
      • Seriously. Most of the people who go to conventions like this go because their acting days are over and they have no other way to make money.
    • Actors you had forgotten about
      • Remember Pyro from the old X-Men movies? Yeah, I wish I didn’t either.
    • Voice Actors and Motion Captures
      • Theres a weird divide between “actors” (who rank first), “voice actors” (who rank second), and “motion captures” (who rank last).
        • Actors: Normal actors.
        • Voice Actor: Anyone who’s ever been the voice of a cartoon character is a voice actor. You hear them but don’t see them.
        • Motion Captures: The lady who voiced Maz Katana in Star Wars was not present, but the lady who provided the motion capture was. That means she’s the lady who put on a suit and made faces that they then turned into Maz’s expressions and gestures.
    • William Shatner
      • I think he’ll go to anything, to be completely honest.
    • Pro Wrestlers
      • Not sure why they were there, but they were.
      • They usually have skinny, blonde women with them.
    • Gymnasts and Dancers
      • I’m also not sure why they were there, but they seemed to be having fun.
  • Fan Wars
    • You thought Captain America: Civil War was brutal? Wait until you see Marvel: Comics Elitists vs Casual Fans or Comics: DC vs Marvel.
      • Don’t be the person who starts either of these wars, please. Also don’t start “the book was better than the movie” or any of that nonsense.
    • Some people who read the comics think they’re better than people who watch the movies. Some don’t. Guess which one makes the most noise?

I can’t even begin to list all the things that you’ll see at a convention. Its absurd and its so much fun. You will wish you had eyes on every side of your head so that you could keep track of everything.
